Brief History
Minnesota became a United States territory in 1849, and St. Cloud followed shortly after in 1851. Named for a suburb of Paris, the city sits on intertwining branches of the Mississippi. Because of its location on the river, St. Cloud quickly grew thanks to the bustling fur trade. By the 1880s, a number of prolific granite quarries opened in the area as well, giving St. Cloud the nickname “Granite City.”
Outdoor Activities
St. Cloud is home to world-class kayaking, particularly around the 30 undeveloped islands speckled across our local stretch of the Mississippi river. There are a number of kayak and tubing companies that offer supply rental, including the St. Cloud State University.
For more outdoor fun, you can also visit Lake George, the Quarry Park and Nature Preserve, and Munsinger Gardens. The Quarry Park and Nature Preserve are especially popular when the weather is warm, because they offer great swimming spots and hiking trails.
Things to Do
For those looking to stay warm during the colder months in St. Cloud, there are still many things to do in the area. History buffs may enjoy the Sterns History Museum, while the Beaver Island Brewing Company is the perfect place to have a cold one. The Herb Brooks National Hockey Center is also ideal for a family-friendly day out.
Great Routes for a Drive Around Saint Cloud
The area around St. Cloud has many places to take your family in your Mitsubishi for a relaxing drive. In addition to the parks within St. Cloud we’ve already mentioned, the Warner Lake County Park is only a 20-minute drive south from St. Cloud’s center. Whether you want to eat a picnic while out on the grass, sit under one of the rustic shelters, or just drive around a gorgeous lake, this spot is right for you. You might also enjoy the Two Rivers Lake County Park around 35 minutes northwest of St. Cloud, where you and your family can picnic in pristine prairie and take the hills as you find them. Both parks are open year round, with the shelters open daily.
If you’re willing to drive a little further, St. Cloud is a stop along Minnesota’s Great River Road, a scenic route following the Mississippi River from its source in Lake Itasca though Minneapolis and further along the border to Wisconsin. If you head north or south, you’re bound to find remarkable landscapes and a number of sites vital to Minneapolis’ history.
Don’t feel like travelling far? Find the Glacial Ridge Trail Scenic Byway near Sauk Centre a little over 45 minutes west of St. Cloud, and explore 245 miles of looping trails around lakes, woods, and farmland. Don’t forget your fishing rod!
Staying close to home is a fine plan, too, and you can always take your Mitsubishi for a little drive around the city. The northeastern end of Waite Park is an excellent spot bordering St. Cloud, within walking distance of both the Crossroads Center Mall and Rivertown Village Shopping Center. It’s also not far from the River’s Edge Park.
