When you have a big family, the 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander and 2020 Toyota Highlander are both three-row SUVs to consider. But the Outlander outdoes its competitor by offering better efficiency and performance. Here’s what you should know.
For greater efficiency, coverage, and value, choose the Outlander. It’s available now at Don Robinson Mitsubishi in St Cloud, Minnesota.

Better performance
The standard 2.4-liter MIVEC engine on the Outlander provides performance with more pep than the slow Highlander — especially with the Outlander’s compact size allowing better maneuverability and zip. A variable transmission is standard with all versions of the Outlander. The Innovative Valve-timing Electronic Control delivers quicker acceleration with less emissions and lighter overall weight. To get CVT on the Toyota you have to upgrade trim levels.
Higher efficiency
In addition to being fun to drive, the Outlander is more efficient. It averages 25 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway versus the Highlander’s 21/29 mpg, respectively.*
For even more efficiency, hybrids are available on both SUVs. But the Outlander has a plug-in hybrid which reaches 74 MPGe.** That’s astronomical compared to the Highlander Hybrid’s limited fuel economy. There’s a reason Outlander PHEV is the world's best-selling plug-in hybrid SUV.

Nicer interior
The Mitsubishi Outlander has had major updates recently to its interior to provide better comfort, such as better lumbar support and heating elements. And the redesigned second row allows better loading access and more legroom to stretch out. The Highlander cabin isn’t as comfortable or well-organized.
Lower price
The Mitsubishi Outlander is by far the more affordable of the two SUVs. Its starting price is almost $10,000 less than the Highlander’s. Even the Outlander PHEV is less expensive than the Highlander Hybrid. That’s why it received 2020 Family Green Car of the Year.
Greater warranty
Buying a Mitsubishi is better in the long haul with warranties that cover your vehicle longer than any other brand. It’s 10-year/100,000-mile Powertrain Limited Vehicle Warranty is almost double the length of Toyota warranties. It also comes with a fully transferable 5-year/60,000-mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty and 7-year/100,000-mile Anti-Corrosion/Perforation Limited Warranty. And the 5-year/Unlimited Miles Roadside Assistance outshines ToyotaCare’s two year benefits.
