Drive to the very geographic center of Minnesota, go a little north and you’ll find yourself in the wonderful town of Brainerd. It’s a vibrant and bustling town featuring a landscape characterized by one thing: water. The Brainerd Lake Area features over 460 lakes and rivers (including the Mighty Mississippi which runs straight through the middle of town).
Brainerd is the kind of place where people don’t hide themselves away in the winter. For some, winter is when the real fun starts! Ice fishing has a long tradition in the area. You can catch anything from Trout to Walleye to Northern Pike. If you fancy yourself an expert angler, there’s an ice fishing competition every year on Gull Lake. Winner takes home $150,000!
In the summer, those same lakes that provide all of the wonderful ice-fishing adventures also provide great opportunities for boating and swimming. Riding your mountain bikes Paul Bunyan Trail that runs between runs Brainerd and Bemidji, and also happens to be the longest continuously paved trail in the United States, is a wonderful fair-weather activity. For those craving a little more speed, you can always catch a race at the Brainerd International Raceway.
There’s a lot of life here in Brainerd. Whether you are waiting to catch the big one for $150,000 or racing your snowmobile through miles of trails or just heading out for a bite to eat on Washington St., the lively spirit of this Minnesotan town is present everywhere you go.
